"Honoring America's Domestic Soldiers"

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

Chicago Police Officers Kenneth King and James Camp, in plain clothes, stopped a stolen dark blue Chevrolet Caprice. They approached the car from separate sides, normal felony stop. The driver, later identified as 42 year old Kevin Dean, got out of the car and immediately began struggling with Officer Camp. King jumped on Dean's back, and as the struggle ensued a shot rang out. King called for help as Dean fled on foot. Camp was dead on the scene, killed by his own gun. Dean was captured a few blocks away, after being shot 5 times by another officer.

The date was March 9, 1999

Dean was charged with capital murder.

Dean, with an extensive criminal record was tried in Cook County court - finally, last week.

The jury convicted him of POSSESSION OF A STOLEN CAR, but, incredibly, ACQUITTED him of the murder of Officer Camp.. They did however, find him also guilty of disarming Officer Camp.

1st Deputy Superintendent Phil Cline, stated, "We're outraged by this verdict. We're really confused by how the jury could find him guilty of disarming the officer, but not guilty of murdering the officer."

The jury issued a statement that they believed the murder was an accident during the struggle.

Dean now faces up to 30 years in prison at his sentencing later this month.
